China Junk 1880 1/60 Aoshima

"Junk" is a generic term used for ancient Chinese vessels. Junk vessels were widely used to transport people and goods on the sea, rivers and lakes in ancient China. The name derives from "jong," which the Spanish translated to "Junco." Unlike Western vessels, junk vessels have no keel, and had 2 or 3 layers of sheathing. Oil or lime was applied to the surface to prevent water from seeping in. The simple construction of the mast and sail allowed for easy lowering of the sale in case of a storm or strong wind. Junk vessels were far advanced compared to other vessels of the same era. The vessels were further advanced during the Song Dynasty, and were used to travel as far as India and Arabia for trade.
